Reflecting the long and loud tradition of Texas high school marching band, Killeen ISD is set to celebrate once again the spectacle of music and movement called Spirit Spectacular.
The 48th version of the event steps off at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 19 at Leo Buckley Stadium.
Bands, color guards and dance teams from Killeen, Ellison, Shoemaker, Harker Heights and Chaparral high schools will take the field to show off their competition shows.
To end, the five high school bands combined with the district’s 10 middle school bands will spread across the field to perform a musical finale.
The Ellison Band Boosters began the annual showcase when Ellison opened in 1978 as a showoff for the Screaming Eagle Band to culminate summer band camp.
For most of its 48 years, Spirit Spectacular has provided opportunity for the KISD high school bands to display the beginning of their marching shows leading into the start of football season.
Recently, the event has moved a few weeks into the school year, giving audience members a look at a more developed version of the shows on the cusp of the marching contest season.
For the third year, Spirit Spectacular is including the middle school bands in the grand finale, providing a visual and musical display of the district’s overall band program and a powerful experience for middle school band students considering high school band.
The show is also a fundraiser that benefits all the high school band booster clubs.

The Shoemaker show is called “In Pieces,” and is based on a Japanese concept of repairing something broken and making it stronger in the process.
“I love our show,” said Shoemaker senior John Hall, percussion captain. “It’s about the Japanese of repairing broken things with gold and embracing the beauty of our imperfections. I think it’s a great theme for our band.”
The Harker Heights Red Brigade Band show is called “Midnight Renegade.” It incorporates western props and music.
“I like everything about our show. This show is almost perfect,” said senior Tramel Bracey, Red Brigade Band percussion captain.
The Chaparral Bobcat Band show is called “Code of Silence.” It emphasizes the intense family nature of the band and draws musically and visually from mafia-themed media.
“Our show represents family like the mafia,” said Chaparral junior Khalil Medlock, snare section leader. “I feel great about it. I like the way it’s written – the winds, drum lines, everything,” he said.
The KHS show, “Panachroma,” features classic Americana songs that pay homage to some of the country’s most famous and majestic sites.
Shyheim Willis, Killeen senior and percussion captain said the Roo Band show is about color. “Our show has to do with colors. It’s very fast paced. You’re going to like it.”
Ellison’s show this year is called “Boom, Crash, Pow,” a comic book superhero theme.
“It’s a combination of what we’re trying to build,” said senior Enoch Bolaji, Ellison battery section captain of this year’s show. “We’re putting ourselves out there.”
The bands have already been busy since the start of the school year. In addition to performing in the first three weeks of the football season, they gave a preview performance at Hood Stadium Aug. 21.
Percussion ensembles performed last Saturday in the second annual Drums in the Heartland competition at Searles Stadium.
