Maxdale Celebrates Character, Caring, College

With just nine days remaining in the semester, Maxdale Elementary School got pepped up to celebrate character, caring and learning.
The school’s student council led the way, recording videos of school staff members explaining the importance of responsibility, integrity, caring and other positive traits.
In an assembly in the cafeteria Tuesday, students cheered their peers for academic and citizenship accomplishments.

Near the end of the rally, several classes conducted cheers for their adopted university.
As a member of the No Excuses University network, each class at Maxdale picks a specific university to study to develop familiarity with higher education and preparation for college.
Many teachers choose their own college alma mater to focus on during the year, but some choose a different one.
Each class chooses a star citizen based on character and a valedictorian based on academic performance each month. The school hosts monthly luncheons for each.
Principal Bobbie Evans said the multi-faceted rally was meant to remind students of the importance of learning, caring for others and demonstrating strong, selfless character.
“We want to reinforce our expectations of behavior and always model that for our kids,” she said.
In support of building “future ready” students, she said teachers take time to talk about college and the benefits of continuing education past high school.
“Not everyone will go to college, but we want them to know about it and to begin to prepare for it,” she said.
The principal explained to students that a meerkat, the school mascot, is an animal known for working together. Though they are only about 12 inches tall, they often stand tall and proud. They are also known for diligence and for being curious.
“We want to lift the school’s spirit,” said fourth-grader Carmen Baul, a student council representative. “We want to show that everyone is valuable at Maxdale.”
“It’s important to be kind to each other even if you’re different,” said fourth-grader Samiya Brown.
The two students said their class adopted Texas Christian University as a way to learn about college. Both said they wanted to attend college to prepare for a career.
“We want to show everyone how to be a good citizen,” said fifth-grader and Student Council President Jayla Draber. “We are working to be prepared for college.”
She said she likes Maxdale Elementary because “teachers are so caring, and they are always there for you.”
