Personable Payroll Analyst Named February STEEL Winner

Equipped with the ideal temperament and personality to balance the demands and hustle and bustle of working in Killeen ISD’s business services department, payroll analyst Bettie DeWispelaere is a STEEL Award winner for the month of February.
“Your can-do attitude, problem-solving abilities, and meticulous attention to detail ensure that every payroll operation runs smoothly,” William Baker, assistant superintendent, human resources, read aloud after DeWispelaere was surprised with her recognition. “You’ve made a significant impact with your adaptability and expertise, and your contributions truly make you an invaluable asset to KISD.”
DeWispelaere, who is originally from Washington state and has lived in Killeen for 20 years, began serving within KISD eight years ago.
Tucked into a small, centrally located cubicle in one of the many office spaces inside the KISD administration building, DeWispelaere’s mix of tireless work ethic, friendly disposition, effort, flexibility and reliability has consistently paved the way for success within payroll services.
“From stepping up during staffing shortages to ensuring payroll deadlines are met ––
even in the face of district closures –– you’ve proven time and again that you’re someone the team can always rely on,” Baker added.
Shocked first by the sounds of tambourines and cowbells jingling as co-workers descended upon her workspace with good news in tow, an appreciative DeWispelaere said she also was taken aback by being thrust into the spotlight and some of her first thoughts were about her teammates in payroll services.
Teamwork, she said, is truly the driving force of productivity within her department, and the relationships that have formed over the years are pieces of the job that are irreplaceable.
“The whole department appreciated it,” DeWispelaere said. “We’ve been together as a department for quite a while, so we all know each other really well. There’s just a lot of camaraderie. We all get along and enjoy each other’s company, and enjoy our workday.”
The STEEL Award, which is crafted by students in KISD Career Center welding and automotive classes, stands for Supporting the Education and Empowerment of Learners.
“Your ability to inspire and empower others reflects the very essence of what this award stands for,” Killeen ISD superintendent Jo Ann Fey said. “You’ve proven time and again that strength, perseverance, and commitment can shape lives and communities for the better.”
