Heights Elementary Principal Secretary Wins STEEL Honor

Harker Heights Elementary School principal’s secretary, Kristal Nunn is a Killeen ISD STEEL Award winner for the month of April.
The school’s first-year Principal Tiphani Morris, said her secretary is the glue who holds the campus together and keeps it running smooth.
Now a 16-year KISD employee, Nunn began her journey with the school district as a parent at the same school where she has made such an impression as an employee.
The school’s longtime principal at the time, Carolyn Dugger, asked the highly involved parent to join the school staff as a classroom aid.
She did that for a short time, then transitioned into an office position, where she found what she considers a sacred calling and has remained 16 years.
“Honestly, I look forward to coming. I enjoy this campus. I enjoy the camaraderie. I like the kids. I really feel like a door opened and God made that happen. I feel like I’m here for a reason. I care about this campus and the families here,” she said.
The seasoned secretary finds that many parents need a guiding hand, and nervous children need a kind welcome. “Trying to give that good service is important.”
“You’re the go-to person for solutions, encouragement, and support, always putting your heart into every task,” Harker Heights’ current principal said in the STEEL Award nomination.
“From helping teachers and students to ensuring the principal has what she needs to lead, you’re the glue that keeps everything running smoothly,” Morris said.
“Your kindness, dedication, and welcoming smile create an atmosphere where everyone feels at home. Whether it’s going the extra mile for student safety, making staff feel appreciated, or fostering a sense of unity, you truly make a difference.”
KISD awards two STEEL Awards a month during the school year. The award name is an acronym that stands for Supporting the Education and Empowerment of Learners.
“This award reflects the strength and teamwork that are the foundation of our district,” Superintendent Jo Ann Fey said during the award presentation. “You are a true asset to KISD, and we celebrate your achievements with pride.”
