Early College Hosts Night of the Arts

Killeen ISD’s Early College High School showed off its creative side Friday during the annual Night of the Arts.
The school’s popular showcase, held at Texas A&M University-Central Texas, featured a wide range of student-created visual and digital art as well as literary work.
A student committee organized the evening event that included a food truck outside and an audience interaction piece – a bench for guests to write and draw on, as well as a poetry reading.
Early College seniors Jessica Reesman and Izzi Ramos, the show directors, welcomed and thanked audience members for their support.
“Early College is often perceived as an academic school, but a lot of kids here are passionate about art, theater and music. Because we don’t have as many electives as other schools this is one of the only times that our artists can showcase their passions,” said Ramos.
“It’s a big moment. It’s pulling at my heartstrings. It’s definitely very rewarding.”
Much of the art came from students of Early College art teachers Jonathan Williamson and James Elam, but some also came from students not enrolled in art classes.
Student artists from freshmen to seniors of all ability levels participated.
Advanced Placement art junior Priscilla Barrientos submitted pieces from her AP portfolio about monsters. “I liked creepy videos and horror movies and some of the monsters have personal symbolism,” she explained of her work that included vampires and sirens.
“I love the art show. I see so many pieces, including some from freshman that shock me. It’s really impressive to see what they can do. I really like the idea of being able to sell your artwork or just get it out there. I like how we have the poetry aspect as well.”
Another creative visual artist, junior Sayuri Fejeran, displayed paintings that featured fantastical elements like mythical creatures into everyday life.
“I think the show is important because it shows how artists express themselves. They find a way to display their creativity,” she said. “It’s awesome that everyone comes together, and it’s a whole community.”
“I find it therapeutic,” she said of the bustling show. “I like smiling and talking with people and interacting with people.”
