Celebrate Texas High School Coaches Day
If you see a Killeen ISD coach Friday, be sure to extend a “thank you” and help them celebrate Texas High School Coaches Day.
In May 2023, Senate Concurrent Resolution 38 was passed in the Texas Legislature with a 140-1 vote, designating Nov. 1 as a day to recognize the devotion and hard work of coaches –– high school and middle school –– across the state, leaders who aim to guide student-athletes to success in their sport and classroom.
In Killeen ISD, there are more than 300 coaches committed to working countless hours as they serve the community through their profession.
“I would like to thank our coaches for their unwavering dedication to our student-athletes on and off the playing surface,” said KISD executive director for athletics Tish Williams, who began her career in athletics as a basketball coach. “These coaches use athletics as a vehicle to help our students learn life skills such as teamwork, resilience, goal-setting and sportsmanship.”
The Texas High School Coaches Association is assisting in the celebration Friday, posting many notes of gratitude on its X (formally Twitter) social media page. You can view some of those here.
One such message is from PGA professional Scottie Scheffler, the current No. 1 player in the world who attended Dallas Highland Park.
“I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the Texas high school coaches out there,” Scheffler recites in the video.
In another video message, TCU football head coach Sonny Dykes reflected on the high school coaches he had growing up and also gave a shoutout to current coaches.
“I want to thank all the Texas high school coaches for the positive impact you make on young people every single day,” Dykes said.
KISD executive director for athletics Matt Carroll, a former football coach, highlighted the numerous responsibilities on a coach’s plate –– many of those tasks diligently completed away from competition.
“I personally would like to take the time to recognize and express our appreciation for all our coaches here in KISD. I can’t thank them enough for the amount of dedication, time, effort and caring they put into this profession behind the scenes,” Carroll said. “From the outside, one might only focus on the victories. However, our coaches are winning enormously in the game of life with our student-athletes. Thank you!”
