Coming April 2025: Streamlined FMLA Process to Save Time for Employees and Costs for KISD

Trustees approved an agreement to outsource the administration and tracking of employee leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act to a third-party administrator. The move is expected to streamline the process for staff needing to take leave.

The management is currently handled in-house through KISD’s Human Resources staff. Under the new agreement, the service will be provided by the district’s current employee disability insurer, Mutual of Omaha. Mutual of Omaha offers FMLA management services at no additional charge to the district through a third-party administrator, FMLASource®.

William Baker, assistant superintendent for Human Resources, told trustees at a workshop earlier this month that the change is expected to streamline the FMLA leave experience for employees and provide a cost-savings for the district. FMLASource® will work directly with employees through a dedicated point of contact and be able to better coordinate complex cases that combine multiple benefits areas, including short-term disability and long-term disability. The company is also more readily available by phone for employees and provides customer service in English and Spanish.

The transition to using FMLASource® will begin in April 2025. Employees with upcoming FMLA leave needs should email leaveshr@killeenisd.org.
