On Saturday, March 25th, Joseph L. Searles III Stadium was the stage for this year's Special Olympics Area Meet hosted by Killeen ISD. The event welcomed seven different teams from Central Texas who competed fiercely for a chance to qualify for state.
Athletes competed in the 200-meter run, 100-meter run, 4x100 relay, shot put, running, standing long jump, wheel-chair races, softball throw and more. According to Karen Lanxon, an official from Killeen ISD Special Olympics, the athletes work hard to train and prepare for the event. The meet featured all the usual events for student-athletes and more.
KISD Dream Team athlete Julian, who placed 1st in the long jump for his age group, said he had a lot of fun as he proudly wore his gold medal.
Kevin Lanxon emphasized that their athletes have feelings and aspire to be part of the community just like any other person.
"People of all ages are welcome to participate in the Special Olympics," said Lanxon. Those interested can learn more about registration and participation by visiting www.killeenisd.org/sokisd.
Organizers of the events thanked the delegations, coaches, volunteers, parents, and KISD high schools for making this a successful meet.
Athletes displayed great sportsmanship, competing at the highest level, and showing the best KISD has to offer.
The state meet is scheduled for May in San Antonio.
