KISD Dream Team Gets Big Bowling Send Off

KISD Dream Team bowlingThe overwhelming excitement started somewhere around the lobby of the Ellison High School auditorium, continued inside and on stage, then proceeded on a bus ride to Fort Cavazos and the Phantom Warrior Lanes.

Killeen ISD’s Special Olympics Dream Team bowling team, with students representing 19 KISD schools, gathered Friday for their annual pep rally at Ellison prior to meeting at the post bowling center for competition.

“This is a day we get excited about,” said Ellison Principal David Dominguez, welcoming families inside the school auditorium.

He proudly introduced the Screaming Eagle Band, Excalibur color guard and school cheerleaders, who all brought the rally to life.

Dream Team bowling coach Laura Dunnells joined Dominguez, KISD Superintendent Jo Ann Fey and about 11 coaches and other educators in handing out certificates to 23 students.

They each stepped to the front of the auditorium, received their certificate of congratulations and walked past a line of well-wishers as cheerleaders waved pom-poms and supporters took photos.

Students, teachers, coaches and family members met at the bowling center for a group photo, then participated in the opening ceremony, officially beginning the event.

Bowling teams from throughout Special Olympics Area 12, including Belton, Temple, Academy, Salado, Midway, Waco and other school districts took part.

Dunnells praised her athletes’ commitment. They have practiced weekly since September.

She also praised parents, volunteers and the educators who serve as coaches. Competing together with students throughout the area is an important activity for athletes and family members.

The rally at Ellison is a key part of it.

“Ellison always sends us off with a wonderful pep rally,” she said. “It gets us pumped up and the kids love it.”

Students bowl two games apiece, then receive medals based on results.

“Parents love it,” said Dunnells. “It takes a lot for them. Their children get home from school, and they take them to Hallmark Lanes (to practice). We have lots of wonderful volunteers and teachers who come and help teach them to bowl.”

Registration is underway for KISD students interested in participating in the annual Special Olympics track meet April 12 at Searles Stadium in Killeen.
