CAMP INVENTION
K-5th Grade Summer Learning (Monday-Thursday)
*Week 1: June 5 – 8, 2023 from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm
*Week 2: June 12 – 15, 2023 8:00 am - 2:30 pm
*Different students each week*Summary of Camp Invention: This year's all-new FREE Camp Invention Wonder program is designed to ignite wonder, encourage confidence and build essential STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills through collaborative, creative problem-solving. It will be hosted at Cedar Valley Elementary.
Registration: May 27 through June 2 online or at home campus. First come, first served, limited capacity. Once enrolled, ensure you are receiving communications from the District to stay updated on summer learning.
Transportation: Transportation is provided for students from their home campuses to Camp Invention Host Sites. Departure (AM) from home campus to Camp Invention Host Site will be 7:30 a.m. Return (PM) from Camp Invention Host Sites to home campuses will be 2:40 p.m. Transportation is not provided for students at Camp Invention Host Sites. Due to proximity, Timber Ridge Elementary students will walk to Cedar Valley Elementary.

- You will receive a letter informing you of summer learning options for your child with your student's report card. If summer learning is required, please review "intervention." Enrichment camps are for students who do not need summer learning for promotion and want to stay engaged in learning.
Registration Information
- May 27 through June 2 online or at the home campus. Once enrolled, ensure you are receiving communications from the District to stay updated on summer learning.
Promotion
- Some students attend summer school with the goal of earning promotion. To earn promotion, students must demonstrate mastery of the grade level standards and readiness of academic success in the next grade level. Earning promotion is not automatic.
Attendance
- Students who arrive after 8:20 a.m. will be counted tardy. Three (3) tardies will count as one (1) absence. Students eating breakfast after 8:00 a.m. will not be counted tardy. Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. will be counted absent. Two (2) days are the maximum number of days a student can be absent. On the third absence, the student will be withdrawn from Summer Learning.
All elementary school summer learning opportunities are provided at no cost to parents.
Student Discipline
- Each summer learning site will establish classroom rules that focus on 3 expectations for all students: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe.
Students who choose to ignore the rules will receive one (1) warning before an office referral. If a student receives more than two (2) office referrals, they may no longer attend Summer Learning. If attending Summer Learning to earn promotion, they forfeit the opportunity to do so.Students are expected to adhere to the Killeen ISD Student Code of Conduct. The following critical violations will result in an immediate office referral and dismissal:
- Fighting or threatening to fight
- Damaging or destroying student, teacher, or school property
- Overtly refusing to follow directions or do schoolwork
- Engaging in behavior that creates an unsafe situation or shuts down the teacher's ability to continue to teach
Students will follow the KISD dress code.
Transportation
Transportation is not provided for host campus students. KISD bus transportation is available from the student's neighborhood campus to the host campus each morning, and from the host campus to the neighborhood campus each afternoon.
- Bus departure from Home Campus to Host Campus: 7:30 a.m.
- Return departure from Host campus: 2:40 p.m.
Exceptions will be Extended School Year, Bilingual, ESL students (multiple locations and times).
Students who ride the summer learning bus daily will be placed on the bus every day unless a parent or guardian provides a written and signed note detailing a change of transportation. To ensure student safety, transportation changes cannot be made by phone.
The KISD Student Code of Conduct applies to student behavior while riding the bus, waiting for the bus at the home school, and waiting for parent pick-up in the afternoon.
Students who are not picked up within 10 minutes of school dismissal or bus arrival at the home school on more than two (2) occasions may no longer attend Summer Learning.

Students who receive an office referral during summer school will be withdrawn from the program and forfeit promotion and/or graduation. Students who are withdrawn for misbehaving during the first session may NOT attend the second session.

Edgenuity Statement: You are required to sign up for both the A and B semester of the course you wish to gain credit. Edgenuity courses are self-paced, so you are responsible to complete the A semester during session I to enroll in the B semester in session II. If you complete the A portion before June 22nd, you will still begin the B portion June 26th.
Face to Face Course:HEALTH SCIENCE THEORY - Face to face course summer learning day is 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Students will provide their own transportation to Pathways Academic Center: 1322 Stagecoach Road, Killeen, TX.
Enrollment: Students may earn one-half credit per session. First semester courses (A) will be offered during the first session, and second semester courses (B) will be offered during the second session. Half-credit course (such as economics and government) will be offered both sessions. Classes with less than 15 students enrolled are subject to cancellation.
Application Requirements:
Students may not enroll for credit advancement if credit recovery is needed.
- 75 average in content area courses requesting advancement
- Approval of the Campus Principal or designee
- Passed and current on all EOC/STAAR test taken to date
*If a student needs remediation they will be removed from Advancement and enrolled in Recovery*
Prerequisites:
You must have credit for the prerequisite course by the end of the 2022-2023 School Year. Touch base with your counselor to ensure you meet any prerequisites for the desired advancement course(s) as well to make sure it aligns to your graduation plan.
*Remember, for summer learning credit advancement if accepted you will be enrolled into both Session I and Session II unless you have already received partial credit before summer learning begins or if you are wishing to attend Government or Economics.

CODING CAMP: Middle School and High School students welcome
This camp repeats. Select either Week 1 or Week 2.

This camp will offer hands-on experiences with innovative concepts. Students learn problem-solving and analytical skills while fostering an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related careers with a focus on computer science. Students will code through Bitsbox, Sphero, and TinkRworks.
ROBOTICS CAMP: Middle School and High School students welcome
- Week 3: June 20-22
7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
This camp is designed to teach students concepts in science, technology, mechanics, engineering, and computer programming by building a robot with LEGO bricks, gears, axles, motors, and sensors. Students will program a robot to complete certain tasks with their newly acquired computer programming skills and use of sensors.
EMERGING WRITER'S CAMP: Middle School students welcome
This camp repeats. Select either Week 1 or Week 2.

This camp will provide enrichment opportunities for students to spark their creativity and hone their writing skills. Students are encouraged to bring their own journals, pens/pencils, and colored pens, but not required. Supplies for the camp will be provided.
CAMP INVENTION I & II: Middle School Students ONLY
This camp repeats. Select either Week 1 or Week 2.

II: Students that attend either Week 1 or Week 2 are invited to return for Week 3 (June 20-22) for additional learning and fun based on the previous session.This empowering program builds confidence, entrepreneurship skills, and an understanding of intellectual property through real-world challenges. This year will feature unique sessions that are different from the sessions offered last year.
- Breakfast and lunch are provided.
- Transportation will be provided from the student's home to middle school campuses for all camps and for high school students from their zoned campus to Smith Middle School.
Fine Arts

Summer Thespian Camp
Date: June 5-8
Time: 8 am – 12 pm
Location: Ellison High SchoolSummer Thespian Camp is open to students enrolled in Killeen ISD interested in theatre who will be entering 8th grade through 12th grade in the 23-24 school year. Students are not required to be enrolled in theater to participate. This camp will focus on building students’ skills in all aspects of theatre both on stage and behind the scenes. Based on the Texas Thespian Individual Events, students will explore and build their skills in acting, theatrical design, musical theatre and other areas. Texas Thespians is an affiliate chapter of the international student honor organization for theatre the International Thespian Society. Each year at the Texas Thespian State Festival and Junior Festivals, students can participate in workshops, view live theatre, audition for college programs and compete for scholarships. Summer Thespian Camp participants will introduce and prepare students to participate in these events later in the 23-24 school year. Thespians will show off their theatrical talents in a culminating showcase of monologues, scenes, design presentations, musical performances and more. The fee for this camp is $10. Students will receive a t-shirt, lunch on the last day of camp and prizes. No previous experience in theatre is required.

Middle School Band Camp
Date: June 20-23
Time: 12:30 pm – 6 pm
Location: Killeen High School
Cost: $15Middle School Summer Band Camp is open to students that are currently enrolled in band in Killeen ISD that will be entering grades 7 or 8 in the 2023/24 school year. This camp is not for beginning band students so participants must have played their instrument for at least one year. Summer Band Camp will be held from Tuesday, June 20th – Friday, Jun 23rd from 12:30 pm-6:00 pm at Killeen High School.
Students will participate in sectionals, masterclasses, and rehearsals to prepare for an end of camp performance. The composer/director, Quincy Hilliard from Florida; and the assistant director of Fine Arts from Killeen ISD, Garth Gundersen, will lead the rehearsals along with KISD band directors.
The cost of the camp is $15. Students will receive a camp t-shirt, snacks, lunch, games, and prizes!

Summer Orchestra Camp
Date: June 12-15
Time: 12:30 pm – 4 pm
Location: Roy J. Smith Middle SchoolSummer Orchestra camp is open to students that are currently enrolled in orchestra in Killeen ISD that will be entering grades 7 – 9 in the 2023-2024 school year.
Summer Orchestra camp will be held from June 12th – June 15th at Roy J. Smith Middle School from 12:30pm – 4:00pm. Students will receive instruction in music skill development and all-region music from Killeen ISD orchestra directors. There is no charge for the orchestra camp.

High School SA Choir Camp
Date: July 24-27
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Location: Chaparral High SchoolHigh School Soprano Alto (SA) Choir Camp is open to students currently enrolled in choir in Killeen ISD that sing either soprano or alto voice parts. Students must be in grades 9-12 in the 2023-2024 school year. The camp will be held Monday, July 24 through Thursday, July 27 at Chaparral HS from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. The camp will be led by Killeen ISD Choir Directors. Students will participate in sectionals and rehearsals designed to improve their vocal performance and help learn the 2023-2024 TMEA Region and All-State audition music. There is no cost to attend this camp.

Time: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Students must be in grades 9-12 in the 2023-2024 school year. The camp will be held Monday, July 24 through Thursday, July 27 at Chaparral HS from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The camp will be led by Killeen ISD Choir Directors. Students will participate in sectionals and rehearsal designed to improve their vocal performance and help learn the 2023-2024 TMEA Region and All-State audition music. Our goal is to provide every camper with the best growth and development experience through a week of tennis and activities. We focus on eye-hand coordination, forehand, backhand, and serving skills.
The camp is free to current KISD students 3rd-12th grades.

Free Summer Meals
BEGINNING MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2023
All kids eat free in KISD during the summer. Children and teens ages 18 and younger, and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old, can continue to eat healthy throughout the summer at no cost, just by showing up at a participating meal site Monday - Thursday.
