On the cusp of graduation, a group of Killeen ISD Early College High School seniors on Tuesday stopped in at a handful of elementary schools to show off their caps and gowns and to motivate the children coming up behind them.
It was a sweet and loud scene played out across 16 schools, where a scheduled 155 seniors paraded through hallways, into cafeterias and all over as young students cheered.
In some places, students held signs congratulating the almost-graduates and wishing them luck.
At times, elementary teachers stepped into the parade to hug a former student or a family member.
At least one senior paused to embrace her younger brother.
High schools conduct senior walks differently.
Early College schedules multiple routes and encourages students to choose the one going to their former school. The specialized high school draws its student body from across the district.
“It’s been really nice, especially seeing all the little kids. It reminds me of back when I was younger,” said Lucila Soto. “I chose to go on this bus to see my little brother. I’m excited to see him.” She attended the former West Ward Elementary School.
“It’s kind of crazy. It hasn’t set in,” Soto said of finishing high school. “During senior sunset, its likely going to set in and I’m going to bawl my eyes out.”
“This is more exciting than I thought it would be. This is amazing. The kids are so cute and enthusiastic. This brightens my day,” said Savannah Fitzgerald, who attended Ira Cross Elementary School.
“Going through the elementary schools, it reminds me of the first day of pre-K when I was scared. It’s been a long time.”
Most Early College High School seniors graduated from Central Texas College last Friday, earning associates degrees.
The Early College High School graduation is Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Cadence Bank Center.
