Harker Heights’ Blake Zimmerman scorched the Heart of Texas Soccer Complex course in Waco on Thursday at the Waco Midway Kiwanis Invitational on his way to first place in school-record time, and Ellison captured the varsity team crown on a day in which Killeen ISD runners owned 14 of the top-20 spots.
Zimmerman, a sophomore, crossed the finish line after circling the 3.1-mile venue in 15 minutes, 30 seconds. Fellow Knights Christion Meiners and Cody Zimmerman were third and sixth, respectively.
Harker Heights boys cross country coach Jason Torres said the previous school record of 15:38.1 was set in 2011 by Michael Odeh.
Andy Harper (fourth, 16:03.4) paced a foursome of Eagles –– Aiden Hill (fifth), Justin Rodriguez-Quintana (eighth), Kobe Ellis (ninth) –– in the top 10, and Ellison narrowly edged the Knights by two points for first place.Chaparral’s Caleb Mendoza placed 15th (17:28.3) and was the first of four consecutive Bobcats to cross –– all within 9 seconds. CHS was fourth in the nine-team standings.
Chaparral’s Yeylis Tello (24th) was the first from KISD to finish in the girls varsity race. The Lady Bobcats were fifth overall. The Lady Knights were sixth and Lady Eagles ninth.
