Open house Career Center

Open house Killeen HSOpen house is not just for the little kids.

Killeen ISD’s high schools on Wednesday welcomed students, their parents and other family members to the district’s annual high school fall open house.

At the KISD Career Center, new Principal Mahalia Scott stood at the front entrance welcoming guests.

Several took advantage of the school’s Campus Connect store, purchasing clothing and other merchandise with school logos, just one of the many distinctions of the Career Center, which is composed of students from all of KISD’s attendance zones.

Parents visiting the Career Center got to see traditional academic classes as well as the specialized Career and Technical Education spaces like welding bays, dental chairs and veterinary exam areas.

“It’s an opportunity for the parents to see what we’re doing on campus,” Scott said. “Many times, they only know what their students have said. To be able to see the classes, go into some of our bays. Now, students have created some things so (parents) can see the work they have done.”

“It’s really about that partnership and collaboration,” she said.

The Career Center also invited community partners to directly inform parents about the off-campus work site internships that students participate in at the unique school.

At Killeen High School Principal Kara Trevino stood at the front entrance welcoming parents and providing direction.

“Open house is important for all grades. I think sometimes parents forget how important it is even at the high school,” the KHS principal said.

“It’s about building a positive relationship with teachers, with staff because that is what we do. We build relationships and that is the basis for everything we do as a family here. When we have positive relationships, we can do anything together.”

“It’s fun to have parents go around and actually see how much they walk and where they go.”

KISD middle schools hosted their annual fall middle school last week. Elementary schools hosted Meet the Teacher just before the start of the school year.

The first grading period ends October 10.
