Third- fourth- and sixth-grade students in Killeen ISD have the chance this year for a creative shot of extra learning in a variety of academic and fine arts subjects.
YES, which stands for Young Engaged Scholars is underway for the second year, with Saturday sessions planned each month of the school year.

The interactive lessons are free and open to those who apply while spaces remain available.

Students receive instruction in reading language arts through STREAM activities once a month, with additional opportunities in fine arts and field-based instruction, said district instructional technologist Kiree Bons.
STREAM is science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math.
“This is an excellent investment in student growth,” she said.
“It strengthens reading skills through engaging STREAM activities, fosters creativity with fine arts instruction, and deepens understanding through hands-on, field-based experiences.”
Killeen ISD debuted YES a year ago with 30 third-graders and 30 seventh-graders from 15 district schools.
A grant from the MacKenzie Scott Foundation finances the effort.
