The Killeen ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved the 2026–27 academic calendar, setting the first day of school for Aug. 17, 2026, and the last day for May 27, 2027. The calendar also includes a weeklong fall break Oct. 12–16, 2026.
The calendar maintains the current length of the school day and provides 168 instructional days, preserving existing staff development and planning time for teachers.
Before making its calendar recommendation to the board, the district gathered feedback from employees, the Site-Based Decision-Making Committee, the District Employee Advocacy Committee, the Calendar Committee and the Fort Hood Garrison Command. Leaders also reviewed calendars from partnering colleges to ensure alignment for dual-credit students.
In other business, trustees approved an amendment to the Killeen ISD Student Code of Conduct to support implementation of House Bill 1481, which restricts the use of personal communication devices such as cellphones, smartwatches and tablets during instructional time.
The district currently provides locking pouches for secondary students to store devices during the school day. Elementary students were initially asked not to bring devices to campus. However, after listening to families who shared the importance of students having cellphones before and after school for safety and communication, the district purchased locking storage cabinets for all elementary campuses. Under the updated guidelines, elementary students may bring devices to school but must have them powered off and secured in designated storage areas during the instructional day. The revision ensures compliance with state law while also supporting families’ needs during arrival and dismissal. The updated Student Code of Conduct is available on the district website.
