Across Killeen ISD schools, generous students, family members and campus and district staff donated boxfuls of food for the annual community drive to stock local pantry shelves.
Giving to others is a holiday tradition during the Food for Families drive, which KWTX News 10 promotes across nine Central Texas counties.
This year, 15 KISD schools requested pick-up from the district’s distribution services for transport to the Killeen Food Care Center.
Other schools conducted drives in the same effort, directed at the food care center in Nolanville.
Community Relations Director Angenet Wilkerson made visits to schools and to pantries to thank the students and their organization sponsors for supporting the annual effort.
At Fowler Elementary School, student council and a military student group spearheaded efforts to promote, collect and record.
Parent liaison Christina Viernes said the school donated 77 boxes containing almost 3,500 individual items.
“We came together as a community, and everyone just gave what they could to provide for those in need,” said Viernes. “It was a great turnout.”
“Our staff was amazed at the year we had. We try to rally our kids and tell them how we have people in the community who need help. They want to help.”
Nolanville Elementary counselor Justine Heflin praised her students and staff members. They filled 60 boxes with about 2,500 items.
“Our students always get excited to help the community,” she said. “It is so great to see them caring for others.”
