The pre-kindergarten teachers at Maude Moore Wood Elementary School are using a variety of creative strategies to find fun ways to engage parents in their young students’ learning.
For the third time this school year, the pre-kindergarten teachers hosted a parent engagement night after school Thursday.
A Winter Wonderland game board mixing reading, math and movement proved the most popular family event yet for the pre-kindergarten group.
Teachers Estella Gomez, Sarah Tarrant and Amber Condrey expressed excitement at family members’ participation.
Parents, students and siblings rolled a large dice and moved around taped-down spots, reinforcing number and letter recognition.
Other stops on the board included a reading station with large books and boxes to sort through to find letters. There was also a hot cocoa station.
“We want to be able to show parents what their children know and to show them ways they can engage even at home,” Gomez said, noting that the mix of kinesthetic movement with rhyming and numbers was powerful.
“It’s also just good family engagement and it’s fun.”
