There were an unusual number of gray hairs, walking canes and general curmudgeonly behavior in Killeen ISD Friday – and that was just the kids.
Truthfully, students and staff members across several KISD elementary schools observed the 100th day of school by dressing up in elderly attire, some with drawn-on wrinkles, silver colored hair, canes and walkers.
Others wore shirts with the number 100 or applied 100 beads or other small items to clothing or backpacks.
Many dressed-up students even assumed the role of elderly person, complaining of aching joints and calling each other grandma and grandpa.
Finishing 100 days of the school year prompts math lessons about 10s and 100s and also celebrations and congratulations about completing 100 days of learning and growing.

Hay Branch Elementary School third-grade teacher Angela Baker said she focused on the accomplishment of 100 days finished.
“The class came in excited about the 100th day of school and students were inquiring about what that meant. I explained that was a huge accomplishment and we used the 100th day to learn better place value,” she said.
“The kids are just celebrating and having a good time knowing they have been coming to school for 100 days.”
At Venable Village Elementary School, the first-grade teaching team joined together to dress in 100-day attire with matching wigs, dresses and accessories.
Alexandra Guzman, an apprentice teacher, said the 100th day was a great milestone that highlighted her students’ progress since starting first grade.
“For me personally, I’m an apprentice teacher and I’ve survived 100 days in education. We’ve had enough time to see the progress,” she said.
“A hundred days in gives you the motivation to make it to the end.”
