Clifton Park kindness club

Kindness clubA new club at Clifton Park Elementary School dedicated to kindness made a special trip Thursday to Indian Oaks Living Center to spread a bit of cheer before Valentine’s Day.

Second- through fifth-graders sang songs and then handed out baked goodies and visited with residents.

PE teacher Tora Haws, the club sponsor, said when the club began, about 70 students signed up, prompting an ambitious list of projects, including a food drive, a toy drive and soon the club will begin a drive to benefit an animal shelter.

In addition to the regular service projects, Haws said the students are excited to make the connection with Indian Oaks a regular one.

The recent trip was their second to the center to begin building friendships.

Maddie Swindler, a fifth-grader said the visit to Indian Oaks was a good way she and her friends could extend kindness to people who might need a friend.

“We’re at the nursing home. It’s important because we want to help the people here make friends,” she said.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and we’re the kindness club,” said fifth-grader Addison Schmitt “It’s a kind thing to do and it’s more fun than school.”

“I think they are grateful and happy to have something to look forward to in their day.”
