Killeen ISD’s three playoff-bound girls basketball teams have a combined 77 victories, and they’re after more as the postseason gets underway.
Chaparral, Harker Heights and Shoemaker all tip off the bi-district round Tuesday night, Feb. 17.
The Lady Bobcats (25-8), who placed second in District 16-5A behind Lake Belton battle District 15-5A’s third-place squad Red Oak (14-14) at Bruceville-Eddy High School.
“The girls are locked in and they are relentless competitors. When we play our game, I believe we can compete with anyone,” CHS head coach Jennifer Graham said. “Red Oak is a strong, tall team, so we expect a competitive matchup. For us, staying disciplined and focusing on the game plan rather than the pressure of the moment is key. If we do that, we'll give ourselves a great opportunity to be successful.”
It’ll be a KISD Class 6A Division II doubleheader continuing north on Interstate 35 as District 12-6A runner-up Harker Heights (24-9) takes on 11-6A champion Lancaster (27-5) at 6:30 p.m. at Waco University and 12-6A champion Shoemaker (28-6) challenges 11-6A fourth place DeSoto (21-13) at 8 p.m. in the same venue.
“I'm grateful for another competitive basketball season. We are looking forward to the playoffs and hoping to compete and ball like Lady Knights basketball,” Harker Heights head coach Shirretha Nelson said. “We are looking forward to representing our district and city.”
Chaparral has qualified for the playoffs in three of the program’s first four seasons. The Lady Knights are in for the eighth consecutive year, while the Lady Grey Wolves made it four in a row while racking up a program-best 28 wins so far and the first district crown since the 2002-2003 season.
“We constantly remind ourselves of our goals –– we aspire to win in the playoffs. So every game day we say” ‘What do we want? When do we want it?’” Shoemaker head coach Elise Kea said. “Our mindset is to win now. Not later but now. The time is now. We want to be predators this postseason not prey. The climb must continue.”
