The Chaparral girls cross country team placed five runners in the top 11 on Friday at Wallace Park to claim the Class 6A/5A team gold in the Hillsboro Invitational.
And that was just a portion of the strong showing by Killeen ISD’s athletes.
Ellison’s Andy Harper, a state qualifier last year, posted a time of 16 minutes, 21.95 seconds in the boys 6A/5A 3-mile race to take first place, leading a group of five from KISD in the top 10.
Harker Heights’ Blake Zimmerman was fourth, Ellison’s Aiden Hill was fifth, Chaparral’s Damari Patterson seventh and Shoemaker’s Blessed Enow ninth. The Eagles took second in the team standings behind Joshua. The Knights were third, Bobcats fourth and Grey Wolves fifth.
Autumn Scotting paced the Lady Bobcats’ during their winning excursion, placing fifth in 21:28.93. Teammates Joana Barcenas (sixth), Kylie Gridy-Terrell (eighth), Jazmin Wells (ninth) and Yeylis Tello (11th) rounded out the scoring quintet. Abcede Carroll was 17th.
Shoemaker’s Brianna Hill finished seventh and Paloma Patinio (10th) led the Lady Knights, who had five runners cross in the top 20 to take third as a team. The Lady Grey Wolves were fourth.

Meanwhile and the Cedar Park Vista Ridge Invite, Killeen’s Deja Brooks ran to 10th place in the girls varsity 2-mile jaunt for her second medal in as many weeks. Emiliano Quintero, who won the season-opening meet in Temple last week, was Killeen’s top male finisher, taking 76th in a deep field.
