The Ellison and Harker Heights boys cross country teams put on a clinic Thursday at the Waco Midway Kiwanis Invitational, finishing first and second, respectively, in the Class 5A/6A team standings while producing a combined nine top-20 finishers at the Heart of Texas Soccer Complex in Waco.
The Eagles’ Andy Harper was second individually with a 3-mile time of 16 minutes, 34.69 seconds with Harker Heights’ Blake Zimmerman less than 2 seconds back in third place (16:36.10) out of 58 participants.
Also for Ellison, Aiden Hill was fourth, Justin Rodriguez-Quintana 11th, Evanov Jean Joseph 16th and Manuel Sanchez 19th.
Kealin Sandifer (fifth), Ethan Hocking (15th) and Shane Postoak (17th) churned into the top 20 for Harker Heights. Elijah Olalde was 21st to round out the Knights’ scoring five.
Ellison finished with a field-leading 52 points. Harker Heights had 60.
The Lady Knights placed fifth out of eight teams. Pauloma Patino placed 18th to lead HHHS.

On the heels of Thursday’s performance, the Chaparral, Shoemaker and Killeen teams collectively said “watch this,” and put on a show of their own, in the rain no less, combining to place 14 runners in the top 10 across the boys and girls 5A/6A races at the Floyd Farms Invitational in Lampasas where the Bobcats and Lady Bobcats claimed the team titles.
In the boys 5-kilometer race, Chaparral’s Damari Patterson was second (19:16.92) behind only Erik Trevino of Elgin (17:49.29). Shoemaker’s Ja’styce Reed-Williams and Blessed Enow were third and fourth, followed by the Bobcats’ Anthony Banda (fifth) and Jayden Brown (sixth), Killeen’s Tristan Chastain (seventh), Shoemaker’s Matthew Patterson (ninth) and Killeen’s Emanuel Cantu (10th) out of 36 runners.
In the girls 3-kilometer race, CHS’s Autumn Scotting (12:26.50) was first in a 30-runner field, and teammates Kylie Gridy-Terrell (second), Joana Barcenas (fifth), Yeylis Tello (eighth) and Jazmin Wells (ninth) joined her in the top 10.
Killeen’s Deja Brooks took fourth and Shoemaker’s Brianna Hill was 11th.
