Two Killeen ISD head coaches picked up their first career wins during a full slate of Week 2 high school football. Now, Killeen's Roderick Sneed and Shoemaker’s Roy Locks will turn their teams’ attention to district play while Ellison, Chaparral and Harker Heights continue their non-district trek in Week 3.
Week 2 recap
Killeen 46, Ellison 33
The Roos outscored the Eagles 17-0 down the stretch Thursday night at Leo Buckley Stadium to secure Coach Sneed’s first win at the helm.
Killeen led the back-and-forth contest 29-26 early in the third quarter after Elijah Sandiego’s short touchdown run. Ellison responded with Zay Crable’s 45-yard TD reception from Marlyn Smith.
The Roos put the pedal down from there, getting TD runs from Jataveion Harris and Amari Page and a Sergio Diaz field goal to ice the outcome.
Paige and Harris combined for 231 yards and four touchdowns rushing. Tavaris Miles also rushed for a score. Paige was voted the KCEN player of the week for his efforts.
Killeen is idle in Week 3. The Roos play their District 12-5A-I opener Friday, Sept. 18, at Leo Buckley Stadium against Pflugerville Hendrickson.
Smith completed 11 of 20 passes for 255 yards and three TDS, all of which went to Crable who finished with 155 yards receiving. Da'Wayne Castille had an interception, Demetrius Perry Jr. returned a fumble to the end zone and Kenyon Thompson tallied 17 tackles for the Eagles.
Shoemaker 67, Del Valle 0
Seven Grey Wolves scored at least one touchdown and Shoemaker romped to Coach Locks’ first career victory Thursday night at Joseph L. Seales III Stadium.
Tano Wooten and Syntel Fielder each caught and ran for touchdowns, and Reshard Hicks Jr. passed two TDs and scampered for one more. Shawn Brenke hauled in a TD pass from backup QB Devon Jones, who also had a TD rushing, and Robert Powell and Diante Brooks-Mccoy also has one TD apiece.
Shoemaker’s defense held Del Valle to 46 total yards.
Permian 45, Harker Heights 38
The Knights’ second-half rally fell short Friday night against the Panthers at Leo Buckley Stadium.
HHHS trailed 31-14 at halftime and got within one score but couldn’t fully climb back into the contest during a second half full of big plays from both clubs.
The Knights’ Arshawn Spann made his presence felt on offense, defense and special teams, collecting 177 yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions, returning a kickoff 90 yards for another score, and intercepting a Permian pass in the end zone.
HHHS receiver Ryan Taylor opened the contest with a 75-yard touchdown, taking a reverse handoff from Hudson Humble and racing up the left sideline, and finished with seven catches for 173 yards. Humble completed 20 of 28 passes for 387 yards, and Brandon Fowlkes Jr. added a TD rushing.
Bastrop 28, Chaparral 18
Bobcats quarterback Bryson Coleman threw a pair of touchdown passes to La’Daevion Moore and rushed for another score, but CHS couldn’t dispatch the Bears Friday night at Joseph L. Searles III Stadium.
Week 3 matchups
District 12-5A-I
Shoemaker (1-1) at College Station (2-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Cougar Stadium
The Grey Wolves open an eight-game district jaunt with a road tilt against the Cougars, who won their first two games (Cypress Springs and Magnolia) by a combined four points.
College Station went 8-5 last season and advanced to the third round of the playoffs. This is Shoemaker’s 5A district return after spending the previous two seasons at the 6A level.
Non-District
Ellison (0-2) at Chaparral (0-2)

Chaparral has yet to play outside of Joseph L. Searles III Stadium this season while Ellison will be the “away” team for a second straight week inside a KISD regional stadium. The Eagles don’t play outside of Killeen city limits until Oct. 23.
Both teams are aiming for their first win of the season.
Ellison fans should purchase visitor side tickets and enter the stadium at the designated visitor gate.

The Hawks are coming off a 54-0 victory over Seguin. They opened the year with a narrow 29-27 nod over San Marcos.
The Knights offense is averaging 519.5 yards and 45.5 points per game through two weeks.
