With cheers and congratulations, Killeen ISD leaders congratulated 10 outstanding district teachers, all finalists in the district’s annual teacher of the year process.

Two separate groups made the rounds Wednesday, one stopping at six elementary schools and the other going to four secondary schools to honor this year’s teacher of the year finalists.

Each finalist received a $1,000 check and other prizes. They were the runner-up finishers to the elementary and secondary teachers of the year, who received their $5,000 check and official honors on Tuesday.

Elementary Teacher of the Year is Caitlin Dunnells, first grade teacher at Trimmier Elementary School. Secondary Teacher of the Year is Karen Pierce, science teacher at Nolan Middle School.

The other 40 campus-level KISD teachers of the year received $500 each.

The following is a listing of the KISD Elementary Teacher of the Year Finalists and a portion of their submitted philosophy of teaching:

Nolanville Elementary Penni Cannon

Since each student is unique with their own interests, strengths, abilities, and struggles, I encourage them to focus on progress over perfection. Even small steps forward lead to tremendous growth over time.

Harker Heights Elementary Yasmin Arredondo

Creating a positive academic culture is essential; students need to feel safe and loved and have their unique differences celebrated. I believe it is my duty to hold students to the highest standards, empowering them to realize their full potential, which will provide lasting benefits throughout their lives.

Saegert Elementary Sharlette Saiz

Educating future leaders by teaching them the importance of problem-solving, communication, independence, and becoming lifelong learners will ensure their success not only in the classroom but in life.

Iduma Elementary LaRae Ward

I believe in a student-centered approach that promotes critical thinking skills and collaboration. I strive to model a love for learning that encourages students to be lifelong learners so that they reach their maximum potential.

Clear Creek Elementary Kierra Callines

By learning each student’s unique strengths, challenges, and cultural identities, I create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and learning is purposeful. With the right support and opportunities, every student can achieve success.

Venable Village Elementary Sonja Calloway

My mission is to ignite curiosity, foster resilience, and cultivate compassionate, critical thinkers who are empowered to thrive beyond the classroom. Through strong relationships, high expectations, and purposeful instruction, I strive to meet students where they are while guiding them toward their dreams.

KISD Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalists and a portion of their philosophy of teaching:

Harker Heights High School Margaret Landes

At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mission of creating self-sufficient young adults who graduate from our charge and can continue to engage in the practice of being lifelong learners in both their personal and professional lives.

Eastern Hills Middle School Laurie Martin

My teaching philosophy centers on the belief that learning is a dynamic, non-linear process, influenced by each student’s unique personality and life experiences. I focus on building meaningful relationships with my students to better understand their interests, challenges, and strengths, allowing me to tailor my teaching to meet their individual needs.

Killeen High School Nichole Brieno-Young

Progress over Perfection is the teaching philosophy that has been guiding me through the years. Our students come with varying levels of skill and knowledge, with different needs and goals; having "one perfect goal for all" is not something that is feasible or responsible.

Jimmie Don Aycock Middle School Lance Dugger

As a science educator, I believe true understanding begins with curiosity - and curiosity thrives in an engaged classroom. I strive to create learning experiences that are not only rigorous and relevant but also spark wonder and invite students to explore the world through a scientific lens.
