Students in the Digital Audio program recently achieved a major milestone by earning their Radio Broadcaster Engineer certification through the Society of Broadcast Engineers. A total of 19 students from Mr. Griffin’s Digital Audio 1 and Digital Audio 2 classes successfully passed the rigorous certification exam, showcasing their knowledge and technical skills in the broadcasting industry.

The certification exam challenged students in several key areas of radio broadcasting and engineering, including audio signal flow, FCC regulations, microphone operation, radio studio equipment, broadcast safety procedures, digital audio editing, console operation, transmitter fundamentals, live production techniques, and proper on-air practices. Students spent months preparing through hands-on training, classroom instruction, and real-world broadcasting experiences connected to the Digital Audio program.

Mr. Griffin emphasized that understanding FCC rules and regulations is a critical part of the students’ daily responsibilities while working with the Killeen ISD Career Center’s student-operated radio station, My 95.1 FM KMYB-LP Killeen. Students regularly apply professional broadcasting standards while participating in live programming, production work, and station operations.

“These students worked incredibly hard to earn this certification,” said Mr. Griffin. “The exam covers real industry knowledge and professional broadcasting standards. Understanding FCC rules and regulations is vital for students working in radio broadcasting, especially when operating our own live station. I am extremely proud of the dedication they showed and the confidence they gained through this experience.”

The certifications represent an important accomplishment for students interested in careers in radio, podcasting, sports broadcasting, audio engineering, and media production. Through the Killeen ISD Career Center’s Digital Audio pathway, students receive practical experience using professional-grade equipment while developing communication, technical, and production skills that can be used in both college and industry settings.

In addition to earning certifications, students from all three Digital Audio classes are currently completing their final exam projects by bringing more than a dozen original radio dramas to life on the air. The productions feature voice acting, sound design, music, live-style narration, and audio effects inspired by classic radio theater broadcasts. The projects give students an opportunity to combine storytelling with the technical skills they have developed throughout the school year.

Mr. Griffin hopes students will continue advancing through the Digital Audio program and ultimately earn their graduation cords through the KISD Career Center by completing the pathway and continuing their professional development.

“This is just the beginning for many of these students,” Mr. Griffin added. “I hope they continue building their skills, stay involved in the program, and take pride in earning their cords as they prepare for future opportunities in broadcasting and digital media.”

The achievement highlights the growing success of the Digital Audio program and its commitment to preparing students for industry certifications and careers in the ever-evolving world of media and broadcasting.
