This month at Willow Springs, we are focusing on empathy and are challenging students to make sure that everyone they interact with feels seen, heard, and valued. During Morning Meeting time, 3rd graders in Mrs. Barmer's class and Ms. Fulwood's class gave examples of ways they can show people they care about them and discussed how listening to others helps them know you care. Great job, Mrs. Barmer and Ms. Fulwood, for creating a safe space for your students to communicate and build relationships! #WillowStrong #BlueJaysSoar #CKH #empathymatters #connectwithheart #WeAreKISD

Our blue jays are always having fun in Science! 2nd graders at Willow Springs explored how the physical properties of matter change through processes. The students observed, recorded, and discussed how materials (like crayons) can be changed through heating or cooling. What a fun experiment! #WillowStrong #BlueJaysSoar #LearningInAction #WeAreKISD

Through hands-on experiments, they tested materials, observed how electricity flows, and discovered the power of magnetic forces. Way to go, blue jays! #WillowStrong #BlueJaysSoar #LearningInAction #WeAreKISD

Students in 3rd through 5th grades conducted science experiments this week on identifying the physical properties of matter. Students determined the texture and flexibility of a variety of materials and then classified the items according to those observable properties, and students also measured and recorded the temperature of different forms of matter. We have some super intelligent Blue Jay Scientists at Willow Springs! Keep up the hard work, friends! 🧑🏾‍🔬🥽👨🏽‍🔬 #WillowStrong #LearningInAction #BlueJaysSoar #WeAreKISD

KISD one of nine Texas school districts to earn two-year literacy grant - Killeen ISD is among a handful of Texas school systems that will benefit from a two-year grant to bolster literacy among young students. Called TXRL (Texas Reads, Texas Leads), the grant provides training and resources with the goal for every student to read on grade level by fourth grade. KISD is among 17 Texas school districts that have engaged in professional development and strategic planning over the past school year to reform instruction to better match the science of teaching reading and support greater outcomes for early readers. “This grant will allow us to engage in additional professional development, consult with literacy experts, and host other districts from across the state as a model for systems and practices,” said KISD Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction Carrie Parker. “It’s a great win for our students and teachers.” Killeen ISD is one of nine Texas districts to receive the two years of funding. The grant-funded reading initiative will benefit all 31 of the district’s elementary schools.
