A competitive dancer, a tuba player, graphic designer and two performing artists at Shoemaker High School declared Thursday their intentions to continue in their fine arts studies into college.
In the fifth of five scheduled campus signing ceremonies, five Shoemaker seniors signed their names to certificates on the auditorium stage alongside family members and educators.
Those students, the college they are scheduled to attend, and their chosen field of study or team include the following:
Kaleigh Green is going to the University of Texas to study social work and perform with the Longhorn’s dance team.
Reagan Breslin is set to attend Louisiana Technical University, where she will study theater.
Jaliah King is going to the University of North Texas to study graphic design.
Deshawn Walker is going to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to study music education.
Jonathan Sweeney is going to Central Texas College to study performing arts.
Breslin is a diverse actress typically cast in multiple roles and is also an accomplished stage manager. She aspires to become an actor combatant working in fight choreography and stunts.
She praised her sister Brooklyn for inspiring to try theater, as well as her friends and Shoemaker theater director Michelle Clark, as well as parents who supported her interest and encouraged her to pursue it beyond high school.
Green is a competitive dancer who began dancing at age 6 and is an officer in the Shoemaker Silver Stars dance team, a group she referred to as her second family.
She is a three-time national champion in dance and recently earned a spot on the University of Texas dance team.
“I would love to use the education I obtain in college to help me pursue my goals to help those who can’t help themselves and don’t have advocates.”
Green is an accomplished visual artist. Her drawings and murals have appeared in art shows in multiple school districts she has attended.
She praised her supportive family and high school art teachers and said, “Being from a miliary family, it was difficult to feel connected to school, but the arts got me out of my comfort zone and involved with school spirit activities with friends.”
Green wants to be a freelance graphic designer.
Sweeney was involved in visual arts and theater at Shoemaker. He made the All-Star Cast at UIL One Act Play competition.
He expressed gratitude to Clark and to counselor Merium Hodge-Cummings and parents to supporting his creative expression.
Walker was an accomplished tuba player for the Shoemaker Wolfpack Band. He earned a spot in the Region 8 Wind Ensemble and numerous honors at UIL Solo and Ensemble competition, as well as the All-Area Band.
He plans to study music and become a band director.
