A large body of research supports the study of music and enhanced academic achievement. Recently, neuroscientists have demonstrated that there is a causal connection between music study and cognitive growth. Music education has also been tied to improved language ability, and increased emotional resilience, empathy, attention span, focus and self confidence.

As a career path, the study of music can lead to employment in a variety of fields. Some of these paths require a college degree while others do not.
