Roundup: Knights Earn Split with Grey Wolves, Grab Share of First

Unlike in bowling, the Harker Heights boys and girls basketball teams actually were seeking splits when they took the court against Shoemaker on Wednesday night.
Second-half surges in some shape or form propelled the Knights and Lady Knights toward their goal, and both avenged losses to their Killeen ISD counterparts that boosted Heights’ chances of District 12-6A titles.
Boys
Facing a Shoemaker squad that averaged 73 points per game while going 6-0 to start district, the Knights turned a close ball game into a more comfortable finish by holding the Grey Wolves (14-12 overall, 6-1) to four points in the third quarter. On the other end, Harker Heights (21-8, overall, 6-1) scored 11 points to take a 44-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
Shoemaker closed within 45-40 early in the final period, but the Knights answered each Grey Wolves spurt and kept the hosts in the rearview mirror until the final buzzer for a 61-51 victory that left the teams tied at the top of the standings.
Elijah Gibson posted a team-high 13 points for Harker Heights, whose coach Jason Fossett commended his team’s composure down the stretch. Keyaun Martin added 10 points, all in the second half, Josiah Rollins also had 10 points, and Larone James and Leo Wilson III posted nine points apiece.
Beres Henry was a force in the paint for the Grey Wolves, notching a game-high 18 points. D’Anthony Moore chipped in 12 points and Khalif Richardson had eight.
Both teams showcased their range from the 3-point line and their willingness to drive the lane for the tough buckets during a back-and-forth first half during which neither led by more than five points.
Shoemaker had a slight edge after the first quarter, 19-18, but six consecutive points in the final minute of the second period from Gibson pushed the Knights ahead 33-30 at halftime.

Girls
Heading into Wednesday’s game, the Lady Knights (21-9, 7-1) hadn’t lost a league tilt since a 49-38 setback to the Lady Grey Wolves on Dec. 17.
After Wednesday’s game that fact remained true.
Arianna Jennings poured in a game-high 23 points for Harker Heights, which outscored Shoemaker 15-5 in the fourth quarter to seal a 50-36 win that kept it solo first in 12-6A.
Makayla Gaston scored 10 points and Jyrah Gray added seven points to supplement Jennings’ output.
Jalaiya Johnson paced Shoemaker (14-9, 6-3) with 12 points and Kaylee St. George had nine points.
