Killeen ISD’s School Nutrition department has been awarded the top honor, “Cream of the Crop” recognition, in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s 2024 Farm Fresh Challenge for its commitment to serving locally sourced foods, educating students on nutrition, and supporting Texas farmers.
The annual October challenge encourages school nutrition programs to serve local foods, teach about nutrition, and highlight efforts on social media. Killeen ISD distinguished itself by incorporating over six locally sourced items into its menus including Texas Gala Apples, Texas-grown grapefruit, pizza and milk produced in Texas, and True Harvest Lettuce grown in Belton.
“Our department is always excited to take part in the Farm Fresh Challenge as it gives us a chance to focus on the healthy options offered to our students every day,” Stephanie Russom, school nutrition coordinator, said. “Students get a chance to learn that their food is grown right in their backyard, and our district benefits from our Texas farmers.”
Killeen ISD joined over 130 Texas school districts in the challenge, reinforcing its dedication to nutritious meals and agricultural education. The School Nutrition Department also hosts farmers markets at several campuses throughout the fall that serve as an opportunity for students to explore unique produce like kumquats and watermelon radishes.
The district remains committed to providing high-quality, locally sourced meals to students while fostering an appreciation for Texas agriculture. By participating in the Farm Fresh Challenge, Killeen ISD continues to support local farmers and promote lifelong healthy eating habits among students.
