Killeen ISD track and field athletes were on the move last week, setting the tone with district meets fast approaching.
Judging by recent results, the postseason is looking promising.
At the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Chaparral’s Maddie Fey topped the podium twice. The senior Friday recorded a throw of 173 feet, 11 inches on her sixth and final attempt to soar into the top spot.
Fey returned to the ring Saturday for the shot put, in which she again made the biggest move with her sixth throw, marking a 47-6.25 for the gold.
Killeen High put together a strong effort at the Round Rock Cedar Ridge Raider Relays on Thursday, accumulating nine first-place finishes.
The gold collectors for the Roos were: Jakai Wright (boys high jump), Keyshawn Campbell (boys 100-meter dash), Kenya Ford (boys 200), Timothy Boatner (boys, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles), boys 4x100 and 4x200 relays, Ahmerus Walker (girls, triple jump) and Karma Bell (girls, discus).
Coming off meet wins last week, the Harker Heights Knights and Lady Knights continued their upward trends at Rockwall-Heath Hawks Relays on Thursday at Wilkerson Sanders Stadium.
Among the winners for Harker Heights were: Imani Gardner (girls, discus), Malik Bell (boys, 100), Jaden Cook (boys, discus), Treasure Bethea (girls, 400); Ella Perry (girls, 1,600 and 3,200), Jada Hood (girls, 100) and the girls 4x400 relay.
Meanwhile, at the Johnny “Lam" Jones Relays in Lampasas, Shoemaker’s Gregory Dumas claimed the top prize in the boys triple jump, Isaiah Butler-Tanner won the boys discus, Kareem Edmon topped the field in the boys shot put, and Aaliyah Rogers bested seven others for first in the girls discus.
Also last week, the Chaparral ninth-grade girls team won the District 22-5A meet, and the Harker Heights ninth-grade boys did the same at the District 12-6A meet.
The KISD middle school track and field meet begins Monday and continues Tuesday.
Next up for the JV and varsity is the 22-5A meet Wednesday and Thursday at Searles Stadium, and the 12-6A meet at Midway Panther Stadium in Waco.
Going into the varsity 22-5A meet, Fey is ranked No. 1 nationally, according to milesplit.com, in the discus (174-6) and No. 3 in the shot put (49-3). Also nationally ranked are Ford, who’s No. 3 in the 200 (20.67 seconds), and Shoemaker’s Malik Esquerra has top-15 times in the 110 (No. 13, 13.79) and 300 hurdles (No. 11, 37.50).
