Prepped and Ready for STAAR Tests

STAAR test rally 2025Schools in Killeen and across the state are making a final push to prepare and motivate students poised to take the annual STAAR test.

In some cases, preparation has turned to motivational rally with professional athletes, driving music and feats of strength.

Former NFL players Keith Davis and Jamar Reed completed three days of visits to Killeen ISD schools Monday sharing their personal stories of hardship and perseverance. They pulled students into their presentation, hoisting them like barbels and completing pushups with children on their backs.

In grade-level assemblies at Skipcha Elementary School, third-, fourth- and fifth-graders applauded and responded enthusiastically to cheers of encouragement.

Davis explained that he was 4 years old when his father died following a life of addiction and his mother moved him constantly to different schools.

He was barely literate when a teacher got his attention and convinced him he could overcome his learning difficulties, leading him to Academic All-American status at the University of Southern California where he was a football star on his way to the NFL and multiple Super Bowls.

Liberty Hill Middle School took a softer approach with therapy pets greeting students in the library as a calming presence the day before tests began.

This year’s largest scheduled administration of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness begins Tuesday and concludes April 22.

A pair of Skipcha fifth-graders said their teachers have prepared them well for the tests in front of them. They enjoyed the added bonus of Davis and Reed’s visit.

“It was really to get excited about STAAR and they told us how they overcame difficulties in their lives, and we can do the same,” said Trey Hirt, describing the assembly.

“I thought it was kind that they were willing to share,” he said.

He and fifth-grader Elizabeth Fields said they took a practice STAAR test and that their teachers consistently teach the skills required on the state test. They also conduct tutoring and come up with motivational activities and prizes to encourage students.

“I feel like they prepare us well,” said Hirt.

Fields said the assembly was effective in getting her pumped up to do her best on the tests. She was actually a volunteer who stood on Reed’s back as he did pushups.

“I thought it was pretty good,” she said. “It got me excited. I was motivated. Standing on his back I was kind of scared. That was a cool experience. I feel all good and confident I am going to pass,” said Fields.

“I’m ready.”
