Grey Wolves Win Third Straight

With non-district play wrapping up for most, Shoemaker picked up the lone victory for Killeen ISD’s football teams during Week 4.

At Joseph L. Searles III Stadium, Brandon Brown Jr.’s 5-yard touchdown run plus a 2-point pass to Cayden Logan from Tyrieke Wade gave Shoemaker a seven-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, and the Grey Wolves defense made a final stand to secure the victory on homecoming Thursday night.

It was the third consecutive win for the Grey Wolves (3-1), who head into their District 12-6A opener Sept. 26 against Temple with a dose of momentum.

“Since summer, we’ve been working on getting everyone together and finding that leadership, and that chemistry over the last three games is coming together,” Shoemaker wide receiver Maurice Starr said after the game.

Starr had an electrifying 75-yard TD reception late in the first quarter among his totals of four catches for 165 yards.

Wade went 10-of-14 for 265 yards and two scores, Brown finished with 98 yards on the ground and added a third-quarter TD catch, Isaiah Butler-Tanner bulled in from a yard out for the Grey Wolves’ first points of the contest, and Willie Thomas ran for a short TD.

Shoemaker and University (3-1) traded touchdowns in the first half that led to a 22-22 tie at halftime. Shoemaker trailed 29-28 before Brown darted in around left tackle with 8:14 remaining in the final period.

Sliding for yards

The Trojans moved into Grey Wolves territory with aim at tying the ballgame, but the Shoemaker defense clamped down and secured the triumph.

“We just did the simple things. We listened to Coach and tried to stay disciplined,” Starr said.

The Panthers (2-2) scored the game-winning touchdown, a 43-yard completion to Zechariah Washington from Beau Wendel with no time remaining to stun the visiting Knights (2-2) on Friday night.

Kaden Butler rushed for 126 yards and two TDs, and Zy’Riyan Evans added 77 yards rushing and a TD for Harker Heights, which will look to snap a two-game slide in its District 12-6A opener Sept. 27 at home against Waco Midway.

Knights quarterback Hudson Humble completed 19 of 28 passes for 248 yards, including touchdown passes to Kristian Nobles and Ryan Taylor. Kai McMillan had team highs of six receptions and 90 yards.
