KISD Swim Teams Score 11 Wins at Monster Mash
It might not feel like fall outside, but inside the Clements Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, Killeen ISD’s swim teams helped usher in the October festivities.
Hosting three other teams for the annual KISD Monster Mash, Chaparral, Ellison, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker, showed up and showed out in the pool with a combined 11 event wins among a solid afternoon of swimming.
Pflugerville Hendrickson secured enough points for first play in the boys and girls team standings, while Harker Heights and Chaparral finished second and third, respectively, in both.
The Lady Knights’ Lillian Halliday touched the wall in 31.65 seconds for first in the 50-yard freestyle, edging teammate Christina Wade by a narrow .18 seconds.
Also earning first-place points for the Lady Knights was Cailey Melvin, who outlasted the field in the 100 breaststroke and clocked 1:25.86 for the win.
Ellison got a trio of event victories, including Megan Sursa (35.27) in the 50 backstroke, Anthony Helmer (1:01.60) in the 100 butterfly and Lane Sopko (27.20) in the 50 butterfly.
Shoemaker was led by individual wins in a sweep of the breaststroke secured by Gabrielle Batts (37.68) and Malachai Charles (32.90), while Chaparral benefited from podium-topping efforts by Alexander Perry (30.20) in the backstroke and the boys 200 free relay (1:47.22) of Perry, Jesse Grant, Jovanni Mann and Connor Bratton.
The competitive nature of the meet did have its lighter moments in the form of the always entertaining 100 free mixed sweater relay won by Shoemaker (Benjamin Merker, Alessandra Urquidi Franco, Caiden Douchand and Stephen Nelson) and the 100 free inflatable-tube floatie relay that Chaparral (Perry, Derek Myrdahl, Jamarian Hall and Mann) won.

Before that, Harker Heights, Killeen and Shoemaker will gather for a tri-meet Monday evening.
