Roy J. Smith

Roy J. Smith was born February 14, 1907, in Wilson County, Texas to Jesse Greene Smith and Mary Magdalene West Smith. Later, he was married to Gene Fellrath Smith. 

His service to this country began when Roy Smith joined the United States Navy. He served as a lieutenant commander during WWII.  In addition, he served as the civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army, 5th Army District, for 20 years.

In 1946, he came to Killeen as president of First National Bank, which was the only bank in town at the time. 

In 1957, he worked with the 2nd Armored Division in its transition back to Fort Hood.  Over the next decade, he played an important part in helping the Armed Forces YMCA merge with the USO. His friendship with military leaders and his understanding of military and civilian relations have greatly benefited the whole community. 

Roy J. Smith is a name associated with strong support for our military, the community, and education. That is why every year the Roy J. Smith Award is presented to an outstanding citizen who has shown commitment to the community.

In addition to our own building, the Student Center at Central Texas College also bears his name.
