Fall Festivals Unite Families, Schools, Community

Willow Springs mascotHealthy snacksThe start of fall (finally) means cooler weather (hopefully) and with it, time to get outside, play with friends and visit your school’s fall festival.

Willow Springs Elementary School wrapped its fall festival around family fitness and wellness as well as celebrating diverse cultures and introducing family members to community partners and resources.

Family members flooded inside the building on Wednesday evening, stopping at tables throughout the hallways to play simple games like bingo and activities like crafts and dance tied to different cultures.

Participants collected stamps on their maps that served as passports to receive a treat at the end from visiting restaurant sponsors.

They also visited the school’s book fair in the library and tried healthy snacks from KISD Nutrition Services.

The Willow Springs bluejay mascot offered hugs and providers like the Boys and Girls Club and Freedom Reigns Counseling provided information.

Several students challenged adopt-a-school soldiers to do pushups and planks.

Family night celebrates culture

For new Principial Anika Stewart family night was the perfect venue to interact with family members and check in on staff members, community partners and family members.

“Tonight is a way to bring cultural awareness and also to promote family fitness and lifestyles,” she said.

“We have community partners who came. This is our first family night of the year. I’ve been really happy. The parents have been engaged,” said Stewart as she greeted students and guests.

Teachers came up with activities tied to culture and designed for interaction. Partners tied in physical and social emotional wellness.

“What I loved seeing tonight is the partnership between our parents, school community, and local businesses to bring awareness to different cultures and promoting a healthy lifestyle. We want to ensure that our students are successful in all areas of life, and it takes all of us.”
