The Killeen ISD Special Olympics Dream Team received an enthusiastic send-off Friday before making their way to Fort Hood and a bowling event to begin this year’s games.
A total of eight teams representing area school districts and totaling about 200 student athletes participated in the bowling competition at the Phantom Warrior Bowling Lanes.
Killeen ISD Special Education Coordinator Kevin Lanxon, the head of the KISD delegation, praised the Ellison High leadership and spirit groups for making the send-off special.
“This is cool,” he said as students and family members from elementary, middle and high schools across KISD gathered in the Ellison auditorium. “Mr. (David) Dominguez has been very supportive.”
The bowling event has not happened since 2020 and Lanxon said students were excited to return to the lanes.
He praised Ellison Principal David Dominguez, who read off the names of all the student athletes as they received certificates prior to the pep rally.
Ellison cheerleaders, the band’s drumline and the Eagles football team all cheered on the athletes.
Special Education Coordinator Laura Dunnells agreed it was a special day to launch the Special Olympics games.
The 37 fourth- through 12th-graders who make up KISD’s team will have a chance to participate in basketball and track in the spring.
“We have students and coaches from all over,” said Dunnells.
“It’s nice to see everyone blend together. We have had a successful preseason. Kids are so pumped-up.”
“Ellison does a great job of getting everyone excited.”
At the bowling lanes, Special Olympics Texas conducted a brief opening ceremony that included marching in an Olympics torch.
