Showcasing their track and field prowess, twelve Killeen ISD Special Olympics athletes competed at the Special Olympics Texas State Games held May 17-19 at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio.
These remarkable athletes represented KISD high schools and competed against 2,000 athletes from more than 107 delegations of the state’s various Special Olympic programs. The event offered a unique opportunity for athletes of all ages to connect, interact, and enjoy the spirit of competition and fellowship.
The KISD athletes took part in a variety of spectacular events, including the 200-meter run, 100 dash, 4x100 relay, javelin throw, running and standing long jump, wheelchair race and tennis ball toss.
Darrian Huggins from Shoemaker had anticipated the State Games dating to last year when he told his coach Kevin Lanxon that he wanted to try something different and run the relay. Every day, when Darrian passed by Lanxon in the hallways at Shoemaker, he said, “I got that relay coach! I’m going to run fast, and no one will catch me!”
Sean Roberts from Killeen High made everyone proud as he threw the tennis ball without any assistance for the first time. Sean struggled during practice, but when it was time to compete, he showed up and won the gold medal. Sean was not done. He also won gold in his wheelchair race as he pushed his wheelchair without any assistance, which also was a first.
The Killeen ISD Dream Team left San Antonio garnering more than 19 medals, including numerous first-place wins. Their outstanding achievement demonstrated the unwavering support and passion of the coaches, volunteers, parents, and high schools who helped make this season a great success.
